Genius Sports Partners with MEDIAPRO

Genius Sports Limited has struck a new partnership with MEDIAPRO to provide and operate its world-leading semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) for CONMEBOL at the finals of two major competitions this month.

CONMEBOL is the governing body of international football in South America with an existing video assistant referee (VAR) partnership with MEDIAPRO. Already used across the English Premier League and Belgian Pro League, Genius Sports’ SAOT will be in action for the upcoming:

Copa Sudamericana Final:

Club Atlético Lanús vs Atlético Mineiro, Saturday 22nd November, Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asunción, Paraguay.

Copa Libertadores Final:

Palmeiras vs Flamengo, Saturday 29th November, Estadio Monumental, Lima, Peru.

In preparation for both finals, Genius Sports has installed its computer vision cameras in both stadiums, enabling the capture of rich mesh tracking data. GeniusIQ – Genius Sports’ next generation sports data and AI platform – will apply advanced machine learning to the masses of tracking data, automating the kick point and alerting CONMEBOL’s VAR operators when an offside incident occurs. It then delivers a clear 3D render showing an exact offside plane, removing the need for manual lines and providing a decision visual with the best possible angle within seconds.

Genius Sports’ technology will help to increase the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of offside decisions across the two finals, saving valuable time and helping to maintain the natural flow of the game.

“GeniusIQ is rapidly becoming the operating system of world football, and we’re delighted to equip CONMEBOL with our world-leading SAOT across these two finals. Fans deserve technology that enhances the accuracy of decisions while maintaining the natural flow of the game we all love, and our technology will provide them with transparent, fair and fast decisions for any offside call,” said Harry Lennard, Head of Officiating at Genius Sports.
