US Gambling Industry to See Further Expansion in 2023

2022 has been another important year for the US gambling industry. More states have made gambling legal and that is a trend that will continue next year. It’ll begin with two further states n in January making sports betting legal
This year got off to a good start for online gaming with New York making betting legal. They have enjoyed massive success this year and with the NFL play-offs and Super Bowl on the horizon, the next few months are going to see huge figures.
It’s not just sport that people are now loving to place bets on. They are also eager to go to online casinos and play games such as roulette, baccarat, blackjack and a whole range of slot games.
The growth in the gambling industry began four years ago. That’s when a US Supreme Court Judge changed the rules regarding who could decide if a state wished to make betting legal. Up until then it was the federal government that had the final say. His ruling meant that it would now be the individual state who were responsible for the decision on whether or not to legalize gambling.
Since then, over 30 US states have taken the decision to make betting legal.
One of the US states that campaigned heavily for the rules to change was New Jersey. It wasn’t too long after the US Supreme Court Judge ruling that the state made sports betting legal. Those in the state who wish to open accounts need to do some research before they register. Reading an this online casino list for New Jersey can be very helpful indeed.
Making it legal to play at US online casinos gives gamblers far more protection. It’s far better than seeing them head towards illegal sites. They don’t offer adequate customer protection but sadly are still flourishing in the US as a recent report published by the American Gaming Authority has shown.
Another key reason to make gambling legal is the help that it can give to state finances. It’s been a tough time due to the pandemic and now the economic problems being caused by the war in Ukraine. Seeing millions of dollars worth of gambling tax revenue flowing into the coffers is a good way to raise additional funds.
It’s been frustrating for those US states in the days before they legalize online betting. They have to watch residents cross the border to go to neighboring states who have made betting legal. That sees those other states receiving gambling tax revenue from bettors who don’t even live in the state.
January 2023 is going to be an exciting time for the US gambling industry. The very first day of the new year will see Ohio make sports betting legal on the very first day of the year.
It’s not just sport that people will be gambling on though. Many will head to the online casinos that will also be available.
January will also see Massachusetts join the growing list of US states that have made gambling legal. In Ohio, both online and in-person betting at casinos and other venues granted operating licenses will be possible. That won’t be the case in Massachusetts where a staggered launch is taking place.
January will see in-person sports betting become legal. Online betting isn’t expected to become legal until March. That means the Super Bowl will be missed but the NCAA March Madness event will see those in Massachusetts able to go online and legally bet on the matches
2023 is expected to see more US states go down the legalization route. It is important for those who do to ensure that precautions are taken to ensure there is adequate protection for gamblers. It is easier than you might think to become addicted. A state that does legalize gambling must have help available for those who may need it in regards to how gambling affects their life.
The presence of a gambling helpline and other services is important. As the US gambling industry continues to expand, it’s likely to see an increasing amount of people seeking help if they run into trouble with their gambling.
The presence of help on offer and strong regulation by US states is vital if the expanding gambling industry isn’t going to lead to an increase in the number of people suffering gambling harm.
Gambling, whether it be on sport or at online casinos will continue to grow in 2023. It will help the finances of those states that legalize gambling and help to protect gamblers who can bet with licensed and regulated sites.

Kindbridge Research Institute Launches “Stigma Stand Down” for Military Mental Health

Kindbridge Research Institute (KRI), a national leader in behavioral addiction research, announced the launch of Stigma Stand Down (SSD), a Colorado statewide initiative dedicated to confronting stigma, breaking down barriers, and fostering resilience among active-duty service members, veterans, and their families impacted by mental health and gambling-related challenges.
Inspired by military “safety stand-downs,” SSD addresses the hidden burdens carried by those who serve, where stigma often prevents seeking help for mental health issues, including gambling disorder – a condition up to 3.5 times more prevalent in military populations than civilians. With over 60,000 active-duty, guard, and reserve personnel in Colorado, as well as the rapid growth of legalized sports betting since 2018, SSD arrives at a critical time to normalize conversations around mental health, PTSD, depression, substance use, and gambling-related harms.
“Stigma is a silent enemy that leaves our service members and veterans isolated, harming their families, units, and mission readiness. Stigma Stand Down is our frontline response: dismantling shame and delivering free, confidential, evidence-based care designed for military realities. We thank our partners for standing with us and call on more allies to help transform lives and build stronger communities,” said Mark Lucia, Director of Programming at Kindbridge Research Institute.
Key elements of Stigma Stand Down include:
• Education and Resources: Practical, no-jargon webinars, videos, and courses on gambling disorder, mental health, financial literacy, and stigma reduction, accessible via a dedicated, mobile-friendly website for leaders, families, and providers.
• Free Mental Health Support: Through a partnership with Kindbridge Behavioral Health – a specialized national telehealth provider for gaming, gambling, and mental health issues – military members and their families can access free, confidential virtual therapy sessions.
• Statewide Outreach: Multimedia campaigns, on-base distributions, geographically targeted ads, and veteran-led stories to reach rural and underserved areas, fostering a culture where seeking help is seen as strength.
• Self-Assessment Tools: An anonymous Gambling Self-Check (BBGS) screener providing immediate, personalized feedback to encourage early intervention.
SSD builds on insights from KRI’s 50×4 Vets initiative and partnerships with organizations including the University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of New Mexico, Cactus Advertising Agency, and Kindbridge Behavioral Health. This program was made possible through grants provided by the Colorado Division of Gaming and FanDuel.
